I love Sol Lewitt’s Sentences on Conceptual Art. His very first thought especially:
- Conceptual artists are mystics rather than rationalists. They leap to conclusions that logic cannot reach.
Ideas are spontaneous. Clusters of ideas create concepts. WE have to be careful that the development of concepts does not overshadow the original unconstrained inspirational freedom of the original idea.
Clusters have a way of wanting to organize or relate to our experiences. This is how the ego enters the concept. When your ego can be seen in a work that you’ve created, you have placed a limitation on yourself and the work then stops being creative.
Ideas should remain free, independent, unconstrained, individualized, and unique. Ideas should remain mystical and go beyond limitations.
