I think the hardest thing to do as a person and as an artist is to understand yourself and your soul. It’s hard to truly understand who you are, instead of what someone else thinks you should be, or what they think you are. How someone else thinks an artist is or should be and what someone else thinks I am. The reason I think this is hard is because it is hard to think of yourself as free. It is easier to think of yourself as an artist that is free. But, as a person it is harder. Why? You are free, your soul is free, and you, as an artist, are free. What does it mean to be free? What does freedom mean? Obviously, I don’t mean you can set your own driving regulations or your own regulations for violence. You need to work within the limitations of civil society.
For me as a person and as an artist, part of freedom means seeing things as a fluid, flowing liquid that is not categorized and not labeled. It is one reason why you see in my work watercolor washes and flowing colors working together. It is also why you see cages, entrapments, and escape.
