Collaborative Art and Poetry Exhibition March 1 – April 15th, 2018 Opening reception and Poetry Reading March 1st, 2018, 6-8 pm

Artist: Christine Alfery Poets: Christine Alfery, Stephen Anderson, Sylvia Cavanaugh , Chris Daleiden, Barbara Holt, Mara  Ptacek, Barb Schmeling, Paula Schulz, Nancy TeWinkel, Phyllis Wax, Mary Wehner, Tori Wellhouse.

Christine Alfery has never been able to color in the lines, she’s not a fan of coloring books and has never made chocolate chip cookies the same way twice. So it makes sense that she has a hard time following the rules when it comes to making art. Rules have a function. They establish a foundation from which an artist can expand, experiment and explore ideas in the pursuit of creativity, discovery, and art. If creativity and discovery are what art is, and she believes they are, then art needs to fall outside of established foundations, lines, rules and boundaries. Alfery has no interest in creating something that does not make another think beyond their comfort zone. She has no interest in creating something that does not depart from today’s thinking and imaginings. Alfery believes that art is a journey. It allows us to travel on new pathways and it should be like water: fluid, indeterminate and distinctive. Art should be always changing and always moving. Christine Alfery earned her Bachelors of Science degree, her Master’s degree in Education, her MFA degree and her Ph.D minor in Contemporary Art History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Christine is a signature member of numerous art organizations including the International Society of Acrylic Painters, the Western Watercolor Society and the Watercolor Societies of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Missouri and Alabama. She annually has solo exhibitions throughout the United States. Alfery is presently the curator at Howard Young Art Gallery in Minocqua, Wisconsin. She has received over 55 national awards and her work can be found in over sixty different publications. Christine’s studio is located in northern Wisconsin.

Magic Carpet

Magic Carpet

“Magical Moments”

warm soft yellow light
floods the room
windows shadow
stretched across the floor

crystals catching the
sun
making rainbows
swirl around her

quietly
she sat in the
warm yellow room
on her carpet

watching   allowing
rainbow colors

to weave
through her
and flow from
her

magical
moments

The Wall and Poem “Blooming”

“Blooming”

stones jeweled in the garden wall
some veined with history some polished new

an agate splashed backdrop for hollyhock
& climbing rose   brushstrokes of every hue

brought up from the black earth   held lightly
those petaled moments they won’t last

more than a season   what’s in the eye
never stops at a wall   It travels up & over

to the other side   visible even in the dark
every stem & blossom   droops and rests

ready for next morning’s glory   ribbons
of color running through the light-box of summer.

The Magic Of Fireflies

The Magic Of Fireflies

can i be excused?
           she asks
not waiting for a reply
scampering off
           grabbing a mason jar
           on the way
in the backyard
girlfriends already gathered
with precious mason jars
           hours of giggles
           and laughter
           pass
i got one she says as
magical tiny lights appear
           everywhere
day light quietly slips away
mother calls from the screen door
           time for bed

aww they shout in chorus
slowly friends part
mason jars filled with
           fireflies lighting
           their way

older now
i remember those
wonderful
           twilight hours
with delight
           and the magic of
natures flashlight

playing with girlfriends
in the backyard.

Celebrate, Celebrate

cobalt sky
grasshoppers and butterflies
green horizons
      Jamaica blue
      bays
rainbow sails
      kaleidoscopic color
      arching …..
            turning with the wind
naked toes
      digging into the sand
      deep breath ……
listen to the music
celebrating today.

1000×1000 yes yes yes….es

     … wonder
     anywhere …
          over there
          up
          ward
pierce tangled todays

journeys embraced
      … search
      dancing
           inky black skies
     step step stepping
           iridescent
           brightful
           summits
diamonds   rubies   sapphires   sparkle
      its
just over there
keep going

push away tangled yesterdays
           fly
           venture
on
roads not taken
ladders seldom climbed
bridges rarely crossedlt;p>

open the gates of a
          thousand x thousand
          yes – yes – yes –
